Why setting goals for weight loss is important

By Ilse de Graaf

No goals without a plan!

I’ll gladly teach you everything I know about how to lose weight, starting with making a quality plan. To create one, it’s also important to set yourself some goals. Without goals, you can’t create a plan. They are the foundation, the legs of the table. But how do you do it? How do you set the right goals? Why are these goals important? How do you make a suitable weight loss goal?

Why it is important to plan and set goals
Like I said in my previous blogpost about why it is important to think of a strategy for your weight loss journey, a coordinated effort will bring better results than if you’re just mucking about. That’s why a plan is crucial. With a decisive plan, not the “I’m-just-doing-something” mentality, you will make it easier for yourself to stick to your strategy and reach your goals.

And heck yes! Why choose the ‘difficult road’ if there’s also an ‘easy alley’? Well, I’m not saying losing weight is super easy (because hey, I tried half of my life to get to where I wanted to be and reach my goals!) but I’m just saying that we should make it as easy as possible for ourselves to reach the goals we want. So let’s reach those goals!

Why is setting goals for weight loss important?
Goals are important because they give focus. When you set goals, it means you’ve thought about what you want to accomplish in your life. You have created clarity, and clarity gives you direction. It’s literally a push from behind to get you where you want to go.

Your goals are part of your plan of action. In your head, you can imagine anything. But as long as they are only (vague) thoughts about what you want to accomplish, that’s where it ends. And exactly that has to change.

Brain fact: Did you know… Whenever you put what you want to accomplish and the goals it consists on into words, you give your brain the signal that this is something important. You’ll notice that those goals give you more clarity about what you want. You’ll know where you stand. Your goals make you driven, which makes it easier to approach your end goal. They keep you on the right track, precisely because you know so well what your goals are.

By the way – setting weight loss goals is not a bore! No, thinking about them will give you a chance to create a better vision of who you want to be. How great is that? It will automatically give you an enthusiastic feeling!

What makes a goal a quality goal?
A quality goal will inspire you. You will look forward to reaching that goal. But at the same time, you will feel a certain level of tension. You don’t want to lose weight just because. No, you want to lost weight because your pain button (I explain this in this blogpost) is red hot. Because that feeling inside you is screaming that something must change, and you want it to.

That’s why a quality goal is both frightening and exciting. It will give you butterflies in your stomach, as much out of enthusiasm as out of “holy-crap-this-is-scary”. Make your quality goal into a challenge. Let the goal pull you out of your comfort zone. Yes, the word alone says it all: your comfort zone is the area in which you feel safe. It’s pleasant there, you don’t have to think too much about it, and you’re not doing any crazy stuff. It feels nice there. Imagine a circle drawn around you. Everything that you think is stirring, unpleasant, not much fun, and sometimes downright scary, is outside that circle.

Your goal has to be outside that circle. Then it becomes a challenge, something to fight for. And you want that because it will make your circle bigger. (By the way, there’s also something called the panic zone. That’s pushing it too far girlfriend!)

By making the comfort zone circle bigger bit by bit, you will reach your goal. And guess what happens? Something that was formerly not in your comfort zone is now part of it! It’s up to you!

You set your quality goals. You and no one else. Only you can decide and see through what you want. Oh, and don’t go easy on yourself! Half-baked goals will get you half-baked results. So, go crazy and aim high. No mediocre goals, but kick-ass Weight Loss Ninja goals! Decide for yourself what you want, what you really-really want (former Spice Girls fan calling!) and don’t go for an ounce less. We are not in this world to be “mediocre” or “just like the rest”, are we? Go for it! Aim high, aim for kick-ass goals (by your standards!) and go for marvelous results. Ninja POWER!
