How to stay focused and motivated during weight loss

By Ilse de Graaf

A very powerful tool for success in your lifestyle and mindset change is to visualize your ideal self. Your subconscious is sensitive to emotions and images so you can use that to your advantage! By visualizing your ideal self as an intense and powerful image, you point all your mental arrows in the right direction. In other words, we’re going to visualize your ideal self.

Step 1:
Find a comfortable and quiet spot somewhere in your home. Sit down in that space and close your eyes.
Ask yourself this question: “How will I feel when I reach my goals?” How does she look, that new self who’s reached her goals?

Visualize yourself – the more vivid and detailed the image, the better! Use all your senses when creating your visualization.

Can you see yourself? What do you look like? How do you feel? What kind of clothes are you wearing? Who are you with? What do you see? What are you tasting? What are you doing? What do you project?

Take your time and visualize every detail, every feeling! Experience your ideal self!

Step 2:
Open your eyes and write in the present tense what you just saw. Write it down as if it were already a reality. That way, you’ve not only played out a visualization in your mind but also created a written affirmation. That kind of affirmation makes a visualization even more powerful!

I’ll give you an example:

“I feel great! I weigh 68 kg (150 lbs), and after losing 30 kg (66 lbs), I feel energetic again, at ease in my own skin, and like a happier person. My blood pressure has dropped, and I’m not suffering from fatigue anymore.I fit into size 38-40 (size 8-10), so I can wear my previously too tiny pants again. Also, I’ve bought lots of new clothes from all kinds of fancy shops. They all fit so much better now and look really nice on me. I feel sexy and pretty. What a wonderful feeling! I worked really hard, and am very proud of myself for doing it. I feel on top of the world!”

Step 3:
Read your affirmation out loud to yourself. From now on, do this once or twice a day. As you read the affirmation every morning out loud (enthusiastically!) and at night in bed, silently visualize your ideal self. Feel ideal before going to sleep. There is no better way to dive into dreamland!

Why visualizing is important:
By visualizing daily and reading your affirmation out loud, you reprogram yourself. This helps you create
new thoughts, habits, and the attitude needed to be successful and transform yourself. It also helps you ditch negative thoughts or thoughts that hold you back. And more importantly, it transforms your mental comfort zone. The you who formerly thought small becomes someone who believes anything is possible.

Your insecurities and doubts disappear, making room for certainty and trust! (YAY!)
By visualizing and writing down your affirmations and verbalizing them, you stay focused on what you want to accomplish.
And if problems or challenges arise, you will be able to come up with a faster solution
because of that focus.

In short, visualizations and affirmations are good motivational tools to continuously direct you towards your goals. And don’t be afraid of adjusting your visualizations and affirmations every now and then. Leave things out or add new elements. They are not set in stone. You can always change them.

Your visualizations and affirmations are a work in progress, just like you!
