6 Tips For Developing Healthy Eating Habits

By Ilse de Graaf

Creating healthy eating patterns is of utmost importance when transforming your lifestyle to one of weight loss and wellness. Have you ever wondered how you do it? How you go from unhealthy, unbalanced feeding frenzies to a wholesome pattern in which you give your body, both literally and figuratively, the food that it needs? Well, you’ve come to the right place as that is one of my areas of expertize. We come back to the word habit which is a common word in my teachings. Habits, both positive and negative are what define our lifestyle, we have to create new habits in order to make a lifelong change. So Ninja, are you ready to hear what tips I have for developing new healthy eating habits?

First of all, WATER
It’s something I’ve mentioned in previous blog posts but that’s because it’s super important. DRINK LOTS OF WATER! At least two liters every day. Drinking plenty of water helps with so many bodily functions but not only that, it makes you feel great! You know those mornings where you wake up with a headache or feeling groggy, a large glass of water oftens solves the problem. Rehydrate, rehydrate, rehydrate! Thirst can often be mistaken for hunger, you might think you need a snack but what your body truly wants is water. I mean, sometimes you might genuinely be hungry but why not test this by drinking a big glass of water and then checking back in with yourself 15 minutes later?

Avoid artificial foods
Let’s stick with real foods hey Ninja? I’m talking about fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, lean meats, legumes, whole grains – you want to eat as naturally as possible, y’know, the way nature intended it. Overly processed foods are full of ‘who knows what’ but SUGAR being one of the worst additives. Real foods are rich in antioxidants and fiber, they will leave you feeling satisfied for longer.

Chew your food
Did you know that digestion starts in your mouth? By chewing your food properly you trigger your digestion and produce more saliva which contains digestive enzymes that help to break down your food, meaning your digestive system doesn’t have to work as hard. By giving your digestion a much needed break you promote growth and repair in the body!

Mindful eating
If you eat attentively, you’ll enjoy it more, and you’ll be more aware of what you’re eating. So, don’t eat in front of the television (okay, except on comfy pants night, like my partner and I sometimes have). Try to take your time eating. It’s such an underwhelming feeling when you take a lot longer to prepare your food than to eat it. Eat calmly and put down your cutlery for a moment with every bite. Did you know that your brain only registers that you are full after 20 minutes? If you finish your food within that time and still want more, wait those 20 minutes and see if you still have that craving.

Add some variety to your meals
Eating a variety of foods is important. Why? The main reason is that this way you get all of the key nutrients your body needs. If you eat the same thing every day, you will start to build deficiencies of certain vitamins and minerals. Have you ever had that feeling where you are finished with your main dish but you are happy to tuck into a dessert or a side dish? That’s your body telling you that you need more variety. A varied menu is also more interesting to your taste buds, If I were to eat the same breakfast every morning, I would grow tired of that very quickly! Variety keeps your body alert and your mind excited to explore new, more interesting foods.

Don’t let yourself go hungry
Try to avoid letting yourself get too hungry and definitely don’t skip meal times. We all know those moments too well, the moments where you are super hungry and you just grab for anything that will satisfy that feeling. Those are the times when you make poor food choices, you are leading with your stomach and not with your mind. Instead of waiting until you are hungry, plan your meals or carry healthy snacks with you if you know you are going to be on the move all day.
