6 Healthy Habits That Will Transform Your Life

By Ilse de Graaf

A change of lifestyle and mindset must be accompanied by new, healthy habits. Most of the time when you think about habits, you think about bad habits but what about the good ones? Just so you know, most habits are good – without them, we would be exhausted by everything we do. Do you realize how many things we do on autopilot? Like driving a car, or getting up in the morning. You automatically take a shower, dress, eat breakfast, put on makeup, jewelry, and so on. Imagine if we had to think about every step, we would be tired before the day had even started!

In this blog post I am sharing some new healthy habits that will transform your life, believe me, you want to keep reading.

Waking up early
Waking up early really is a game changer, it gives you your POWER back and makes all of the habits mentioned in this blog post that little bit easier. The best thing is, you don’t even need to wake up crazy early – just 20-30 minutes earlier than you have to or normally would. This gives you enough time to do something you love so you can start the day feeling motivated.

Meditation and mindfulness
As you’re probably aware, meditation and mindfulness is gaining a lot of attention these days and do you know what? There’s a reason for this… IT WORKS! There’s a common misconception that meditation means clearing your mind of any thoughts but that’s really not the case. You can experience all sorts of thoughts running through your mind whilst you meditate – the aim is learning how to organise these thoughts by being conscious of them. You can consciously pull yourself out of negative thought loops and bring yourself back to your breath. This is a habit that can be applied to other aspects of your life. There are lots of apps out there that can guide you if you are new to meditation, you can also find guided meditations through Instagram and Facebook.

Eating healthily
Eating healthily is the key foundation to changing your life for the better, after all food is fuel and food is medicine. I hear all too regularly that most busy moms or career women don’t have time to make a healthy breakfast, lunch AND dinner! That’s where your good friend batch cooking comes in. You can make so many tasty and healthy meals ahead of time, some of my favorites are squash and coconut curry, lentil bolognese, cauliflower and zucchini fritters, banana and buckwheat pancakes and quinoa bread – all can be frozen and simply heated up in a pan before serving. Batch preparing your meals and snacks minimizes meal time pressure and also ensures you don’t make any bad snack/meal choices due to time constraints.

Journaling
You’ve heard me talk about the benefits of journaling many times before (journaling is one of my favorite things to do in the whole world) but have you heard of a gratitude journal? A gratitude journal prompts you to talk about the things you are grateful for each day and it only takes 5-10 minutes. Here are the prompts:

Morning:

I am grateful… (3 things)

What would make today great? (3 things)

I am… (2 things)

Night:

3 amazing things that happened today…

What would have made today better?

This exercise may seem repetitive and sometimes even quite difficult for the first few weeks but I promise you, the more you practice gratitude journaling, the more benefits you will see. Journaling in this way helps you to practice gratitude (well, durrrr!), it helps you to become a better thinker, it helps you to clarify your feelings and it helps you to strengthen your self discipline. Journaling in whichever form you may choose, is an amazing daily practice and will help you increase your self-awareness so you can have better control over your emotions and are able to reach your goals!

Being organised
If you are familiar with my signature framework, The POWER Method, you will know that I am a huge fan of a good plan! I mean, it’s the first letter of The POWER Method (P for plan). How will you ever reach your goals without being organised and coming up with a plan? Being organised stretches beyond your weight loss goals, it is something that can be applied to every aspect of life. Whether that’s a tidy and organised desk space, or meal prepping for the week ahead – you’ll feel better with a plan! I find that staying organised helps me to focus, I have set a goal and I WILL achieve it. It also gives me freedom to relax knowing that everything I had planned to do is done and dusted, there is no niggling feeling whilst I drink my glass of wine and relax by the pool.

Establishing a morning routine
A morning routine can often incorporate many of the habits listed above. By establishing a morning routine you are starting each day off with healthy habits. Your mindset at the beginning of the day can change your entire day for the better!

Start by waking up early and if possible by natural light bursting through your window.
Say/write down your morning mantra, this could be anything you like “I am strong, I am worthy”, “I love myself because…” etc.
Practise 10-15mins of movement.
Have a cold, invigorating shower with a homemade body scrub.
Prepare an energising breakfast which you eat slowly and mindfully.

There is no right or wrong answer here, it is about creating a healthy routine that makes you feel great and that fits in with your lifestyle.
